Recap of the week: Pings, Pans, and Thoughts

There have been more than a few things going on in this ole life this last week.  I got over to meet some friends that work at Levanta which was pretty nice all in all.  Then I hoped on a plane and flew down to SCALE 5x which is pretty nice.  I’ve not gone to the sheer number of papers this year but I did meet up with an old friend and colleague which made the trip perhaps worthwhile on its own because of a work tip/connection.  Thanks Dave!

Its now Sunday morning and I’ve gotten re-infected with the sublime joys of running Ubuntu Edgy.  I’m typing this into the Performancing Firefox extension which gives me a decent weblogging platform within Firefox.  We need a so-called “offline client” that is modern and able to handle a variety of weblogs.  That’s a pan slightly.  On the Windows side, I use Blogjet which is very able to manage my singular blog and also create a decent blogging platform.  C’mon guys!  Lets get a decent Linux blogging tool that will give us multiple categories, multiple weblogs, etc.

SCALE 5x has been lots of fun and I’ve met with a number of friends, work colleagues, and enjoyed networking, drinking a few too many beers, and just doing a thing different.  I’m going to publish my retrospective on these shows, what I think should happen next compared to what will, and what I think happens with the advent of the Linux World Expo (no link!) in SF each year.  Suffice to say, LWE offers no compelling value if IDG continues on its egotistical path associated with only bringing value if you are a Fortune 500 enterprise that does Linux in a BIG way.

Health Rounds

I’ve decided to make a few changes in my lifestyle since I am in the midst of my never-ending annual wellcheck.  There is nothing really wrong with me which I give thanks to the genes primarily; but I want to take a bit of action and try to redo a few things.  Here’s the message and I base this on my own experiences:

If you are over 40, get yourself in to a doctor’s and get a wellcheck for heaven’s sake!

Its really simple and it will only hurt a few minutes.  I waited too long and like a few other things its come back to haunt me as I needed to catch up and get things done last year which actually caused a bit of pain.  Colonoscopies are not pleasant strolls in the park, dear reader.  The most painful part is the preparation though.  Find a doctor like the one I had which medicates only too well!  The drugs are all the difference in this regard.

Final Notes on the Recap

Its about 9am on Sunday in the beautiful Westin Hotel here in Los Angeles.  I can feel the hunger starting to stir and I have to check out today and proceed back home.  Its been fun!  Look for my retrospective in these parts tomorrow or so.
