Call it my own interest or desire but I read Jerry Pournelle for years on Byte and just recently went to his Chaos Manor and accompanying website to see what a daybook may look like. I’ve been writing things in chronological order latest on top for quite some while. Perhaps not as long as others but still have ordered my thoughts to present on a weblog. More recently, my thoughts really do not occupy some chronological order and I find myself keeping notes across the board in a thing called an Outlining Program and I actually blogged before about many of these and how to order life and tasks and next actions. Let me just say that GtD while I like the sound of it and the action of it, does not work for me in the long run. But what I did do was build sets of projects that use some of its concepts. As a long-time project manager, I’ve seen the value in these outlining programs and I know that they don’t cross over to tools like Project or Visio; but they are excellent ways of populating things like Mindmaps which take my project events and present them in new and compelling ways.
Back to Jerry’s site though… The level of information and how long he has been doing this work is astounding and I have to admit to not tuning into byte.com for some while and not reading his writing for even longer. The organization of data is rather interesting and its flow crosses over technology, science, mail, news and the arrangement gets me. Its nice to find Jerry writing and looking and analyzing things. I am busy clicking on this and that and running the “performancing” extension during my lunch break at work.
Thanks Jerry for Chaos Manor and letting me find it again
