Often I find myself confused and amused on Sundays. When I was not working, Sunday seemed not much different than other days. I’ve been working today on getting a SuSE 10 laptop working for work purposes since I can do a SuSE install in about 1 hour, get updates in 2 hours, and be productive in 4 hours. On Debian, it takes me a bit longer because everything is from scratch for a desktop. I am going to try Debian Pure one of these days on a desktop though and see if its easier. On SuSE, I get all the tools and just add a bunch of rpms that I keep around.
One separation point though and I’ll take some pains to elaborate. I will not do SuSE as a server. For my home serving purposes, only Debian Etch will do. My home servers both run 3ware cards and I would never do another thing on them. The combination of Debian Etch and 3ware is magical and I can be done with a server in about an hour and have samba, nfs, apache, dovecot, whatever. Thing of beauty! Add in cron-apt and I get emails every day telling me what packages are waiting. On SuSE I use fou4s which is pretty nice too. My overall goal is ABY. Anything but Yast. Yast is one of those things clunky things which never really does exactly what a person wants; but it insists on doing it anyways. Nothing matches apt-get on Debian. Nothing ever will.
Now I have work files and mp3’s rsync’ed and I have utilities installed I need here and there. The new/old Dell Inspiron 4100 with a Intel 2200 ABG wifi card is ready for occupation and use. Thus endeth my need for a Sunday blog entry so I’ll go back to the rather exciting NFL games that are signaling an end to yet another season coming up.
