In the huddled masses around IRC and IM, two engineers pored over email SMTP logs, forwarding rules, copies of existing mail configuration files, and our attempt to redo all that in an new interface. If you have ever done emal migration from one service to another, you know that its not difficult if its the same on both. If both accounts are IMAP driven, you may have issues if you change the IMAP server or move from mbox to maildir folders. We moved from a bunch of forwarding files to a real mail server and we also had numerous and sundry mailman lists to contend with.
The night before last we had mailman configuration issues within Communigate Pro but solved it. In the end we stopped though and reset DNS back. You never leave something even with a chance of borkedness. This morning at 0100 or so, we believed we got things working. Edward added support for RBL, clamav, and spamassassin using an open source plugin. We’ll be watching the mail server a bit as things go; but we never really handle hundreds of mails a day. Mailing list traffic is light usually; but we have 30g of archives to remember all the time.
A night to remember definitely! But an effort well worth the effort. Where we were and where we are are much different places and its a good thing ™. The other joy here is that Communigate Pro does not mind Debian as a host. Yippee!
We all love that particular distribution and it makes management remotely a breeze. And it has a coolness factor. Its also very easy to work with/on and does not assume the user/root user to be of a certain mold. Thanks to the debian team for that!
